Hot Springs Blues Festival - A Great Labor Day Activity!

Join us for your Labor Day Weekend Getaway to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Can you believe that school begins in just a few weeks and the traditional closing to summer "Labor Day Weekend" is only a month away. It is time to plan your spectacular ending to this fabulous time of year. Hot Springs is eclectic so I've come up with a list of things to do while you are in Hot Springs during Labor Day Weekend.

1. 15th Annual Hot Springs Blues Festival - I am always a fan of live music and the Spa City Blues Society knows how to make it a great event. Plus they are having the pre-party begin on Wednesday & Thursday at the Ohio Club, 8PM. Friday the event takes place at Hill Wheatley Plaza with music workshops beginning at 2PM and the entertainment begins at 6PM. After parties start at Big Chill and Ohio Club at 9PM. Saturday you can partake in more workshops beginning at noon or just wait to enjoy the event starting at 4PM. After parties will be at the Big Chill and Ohio Club once again beginning at 9PM. Just $5/day admission cost. Come and enjoy the music!

2. Janis Percefull from the Garland County Historical Society will be giving a free presentation of the History of Hot Springs at Adair park from 12:30-2:30PM; perfect for the history buff.

3. First Friday of the Month keeps the Art Galleries open until 9PM for the Gallery Walk. Many of the local artists come out to speak about their works. Many of the galleries offer complimentary beverages and live music. Hot Springs is rated #4 in the US for Small Art Towns.

4. 38 Special will be live in Concert at Magic Springs on September 4th. The daily admission to the park includes the live concert at night. So play in the pools, come back for Hilltop Manor's afternoon snack at 4PM, then enjoy the lawn concert in the evening. We are just 3 miles from the park.

4. Whittington Park offers a free Concert Band on Labor Day at 3PM. This is a great way to enjoy an afternoon with a little old time fun.

5. Fordyce Bathhouse Museum is always a great stop no matter the day of the year. This is a gorgeous, free museum about Hot Springs and the bathing activities that took place in the early 1900's. They are open daily, also known as the National Park Visitor Center.

6. Quapaw Bathhouse is the perfect place to relieve a little stress. Soak in the thermal pools of hot springs mineral water, get a facial or massage the choice is yours.

7. Bohemia Restaurant is the perfect lunch or dinner option in Hot Springs. The food greatly surpasses the atmosphere so don't be intimidated by the exterior. Guest favorites include the duck and veal but my favorite is the Tilapia with Crab Meat on top - Delicious. Reservations highly recommended.

8. Gulpha Gorge Trail & Picnic Area is a lovely spot for a run or walk. People ask me all the time about the trails - which are numerous in Hot Springs. I have to admit I don't usually have time to wander far from the inn. However, I do drive this route often and it has become a guest favorite - plus it is less then a mile from the inn.

Things to do in Hot Springs Arkansas are plentiful!

Last night I took my dad out for a belated Father's Day. We enjoyed an incredible meal at Via Roma on Malvern Avenue. Both items we had were specials of the day but they carry an extensive menu as well. I had crab cakes which were crispy, not too bready and tender as butter with a spicy sauce and he had the 14oz filet stuffed with seafood done medium rare and it was very tasty with sauteed vegetables on the side. Yes, I got to try some and it made me smile.

We followed dinner with a show at the Vienna Theater. This is a newer attraction just across from bathhouse row in historic Hot Springs. Ken Goodman is the featured vocalist with an excellent pianist by his side. It made for an entertaining evening if you enjoy live music and audience participation comedy mixed in. The shows rotate with the seasons, we went to the 50's and broadway combination. Ken is quick witted and incorporates the audience as he flows from song to song. By the end of the show you feel like the audience are your friends and everyone is just having a great evening of song and camaraderie.

The Hog Rally was in town this weekend so the downtown was extra busy. Which means more music and fun for everyone. My father and I finished up the night at the Ohio Club, a great historic bar in the downtown area. Standing room only but the wine and beer was cold and the music loud.

Hot Springs, Arkansas has Halloween Adventures Galore - Murder Mystery Dinner, Haunted Houses and Tours, and More

Hot Springs Haunted Tours - This is a newer year round attraction that takes you back to the dark side of Hot Springs. Bob and I took this tour a few months ago and found it entertaining for the $15 it cost. I liked that it was a walking tour and how the guide told a bit about the past (which created the ghosts) and then about the present day mysteries. This is a year round activity in Hot Springs that seems very fitting next weekend. By the way there is a $2 discount if you purchase your tickets online. So go and enjoy a stroll through the seedy history of Hot Springs.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre at Porterhouse Restaurant on Friday the 29th. Come in costume and help solve the mystery of "Who Killed Grimsby Grave". Tickets Required.

"Nightmare on Central" - Halloween Party at the Arlington Resort 501-623-7771. Have a howling good time at the first ever Halloween Party. Costume contest and prizes. This is an adult only gathering that includes hors d'ouerves and entertainment by "Mr. Happy" a dance band. Cash bar in the room. Cost is $25/person or $40/couple.

HAUNTED HOUSES:

I am one of those people that everyone goes after at a haunted house, because I am sooo easy to scare. My imagination takes over in a dark, unknown hallway and the screams emit from my mouth and I am trying to bury into my husbands arms. So I have not personally attended any of these haunted houses. I am much more for the family friendly time of day with pumpkin carvings, hayrides, and corn mazes. However, I do know that many people love to be scared so this is what I was able to find in Hot Springs to keep you entertained this Halloween.

Magic Screams Spooktacular at Magic Springs by Day a Friendly Haunting for Families but by Night the Creatures Crawl out to interact with the guests, you can stroll through Phobia House and Murder Mansion if you dare. Open October 30th & 31st.

MidAmerica Science Museum offers a spooky Halloween with an unpleasant surprise around each corner. Open October 29-30 from 7PM-10PM admission is just $5.

Milcreek Haunted House open with a cast to scare you to death! A victim fee of $10/person will get you a fright. Open October 29-30 from 7PM - Midnight and October 31 from 7PM - 10PM.

Quapaw Community Center - Haunted House Returns for a Second Year - You enter a maze of thrills and chills in the deep depths of the building. Open October 29-31st from 6:30-10PM. Call 501-262-9922 for more information.

Haunted Theater - Historic Central Theater located at 1008 Central Avenue is open this year to convince you there is no safe place to see your favorite movie. Admission is $12/adult for more information 501-538-0766 They are open October 25th - 30th (Monday - Saturday) 8PM - 12:30AM and 2PM - 1:30AM on Halloween.

The Taste of Fall, Season One, Year One - Wine Tasting

Come to this Hot Springs historic Bathhouse to try some of the 100 wines offered on Sunday, October 10. This is a fundraiser for the MOCA Bathhouse (Museum of Contemporary Art).

Matt Fuller at Central Park Fusion will be creating some delicious appetizers to compliment the wines. This event is sponsored by Wine Rack and Spirits Shoppe so if you need more information or tickets call them at 501-624-2080. Tickets are $30/person.

This play written by Neil Simon will be showing this Thursday-Saturday only and is starring Jerry Van Dyke a comedic legend at the Ray Lynn Theater. My father and I were able to meet with Jerry and his brother Dick Van Dyke when they performed for the American Cancer Society in Hot Springs this past July. They were both very friendly and funny gentlemen.

Documentary Film Festival Coming to Hot Springs, AR

Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival is in Arkansas from October 15-24, 2010.

They have offered a discounted film festival pass for $135. which is available until October 15th. This pass allows you to view all screenings and festival events including workshops and the Filmmaker Celebration on October 24th.

If you just have a few days you may be interested in the 3 day pass for $50 or day pass for $25. The screenings are located at the Malco Theatre in downtown Hot Springs which is located less then 3 miles from Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast.
